In this study circle, we will explore the most prominent French philosophers of the 20th century, with a specific focus on existentialism and postmodernism. Our goal will be to understand these thinkers' profound impact on contemporary thought and society by reading and discussing their most significant works.
First, we suggest examining the existentialist tradition, delving into the main works of Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Albert Camus. We will investigate the existentialists' fundamental concepts of freedom, authenticity, individuality and the absurdity of human existence.
Our exploration will gradually shift towards postmodernism, investigating philosophers of the latter half of the twentieth century like Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze or Jean-François Lyotard. We will explore the core ideas of postmodernism, such as the deconstruction of meaning, the critique of grand narrative, the nature of power and knowledge and the dissolution of boundaries between disciplines.
Embark on a captivating journey into the intellectual landscapes of Ancient Greece with this studiecirkel on Classical Philosophy, focusing on the profound contributions of two towering figures—Plato and Aristotle. In this studiecirkel, we will explore the foundational ideas that have shaped Western thought for millennia.
We will immerse ourselves in the world of Plato, the illustrious student of Socrates. Through a meticulous yet entertaining study in the form of debate of dialogues such as "The Republic" and "The Symposium," we will uncover Plato's metaphysical theories, epistemological inquiries, and his enduring concept of the Forms. We will delve into the Allegory of the Cave, the tripartite soul, and the ideal state as envisioned by Plato, fostering a comprehensive understanding of his philosophy and its influence on later systems of thought.
We will pivot towards Aristotle, Plato's prodigious student and an architect of systematic and taxonomical thought. Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics", "Politics," and "Metaphysics" will be central to our exploration. We will engage deeply with Aristotle's concepts of virtue ethics, the golden mean, and his teleological understanding of nature and existence. These readings will allow us to examine the divergence between Plato and Aristotle on topics such as knowledge, ethics, and the nature of reality.
